Software Engineer (Mid and Senior Level)

Work for big tech, but secretly dream of being an early engineer at a startup where everything you do really matters?

Photofeeler is a data science company that's changing the future of online profiles. Our flagship product helps people land good jobs and life partners by optimizing their online profile pictures.

We're early into building our team but much farther into building our business. This makes us a really exciting place to work.

Our job offers unparalleled freedom without bureaucratic nonsense (think: can work remote, work flexible hours, no unnecessary meetings). Plus our users are eager and enthusiastic for everything we ship. As an early employee, you'll take part in the ongoing conversations that inform the direction of the company.

Qualifications

Our ideal candidate is a generalist, a pragmatist, and comfortable with math and algorithms.

Our website runs on AWS, PHP, MySQL and Vue.js, but individual developers also use Windows, Linux, Mathematica, Python, and Keras for their specific tasks. (If you're smart enough, we don't care if you already know our tech stack.)

The right person will be able to maintain careful balance between over and under-engineering — refactoring before making large improvements but never reinventing wheels.

Will be pushing code many times each day using Git, BitBucket, and TeamCity with simple build processes that avoid over-abstraction.

The Opportunity

As an employee of Photofeeler you will:

  • Work on a rapidly-growing consumer app (i.e. not stuffy B2B software that sells "solutions" you can't explain to your friends).
  • Belong to a company free of dead weight and bureaucracy, that approaches every aspect of the business from a "hacker" mindset.
  • Be part of an ongoing conversation steeped in AI, psychology, and data science (think: Christian Rudder's "Dataclysm").
  • Learn from a tight-knit team of superstars, with whom you'll interact every day.
  • Contribute to a well-organized codebase with low technical debt, that focuses on clever approaches, not clever code.
  • See your work go live — and be utilized by eager and enthusiastic users — early and often.
  • Work with flexibility over your schedule and location. Work at home when you need to focus, come in when you want to collaborate. Drill down when you're productive, break when you're not. And never sit in an unnecessary meeting again.
  • Enjoy the perks of working for an already-profitable tech startup. Get the exciting startup atmosphere without the risk of a dwindling financial runway or oppressive investor demands.
